55 per cent voting in Kashmir, no impact of militant boycott call

Baramulla, Apr 24 (UNI) About 55 per cent voters today cast their ballots in three Assembly constituencies of Pattan, Rafiabad and Sangrama amid a thick security blanket despite militant outfits and separatist groups urging the people to boycott polls.

Barring two hand grenade attacks near polling booths in Pattan constituency, the polling was largely peaceful. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate from Sangrama constituency Javid Hussain Baig escaped unhurt while 21 people, including two security personnel were injured in a grenade blast.

They said highest voter turnout of about 67 per cent was recorded in Rafiabad assembly segment followed by more than 57 per cent in Pattan and 41 in Sangrama.

Long queues could be seen outside the polling stations much before the polling began.

A 83-year-old physically challenged Abdul Gani Mir was among the first who to cast his ballot at Janbazpora polling booth.

Lalu income tax evasion case: SC wants some other judge

New Delhi, Apr 24 (UNI) The Supreme Court today indicated that it was inclined to request the Patna High Court Chief Justice to decide within 15 days about the judge to hear the income tax evasion case pending against Railway Minister Lalu Prasad. A bench comprising Mr Justice K G Balakrishanan, Mr Justice A R Lakshmanan and Mr Justice S H Kapadia while adjourning the hearing of the case till May 5 made its mind.....

Scores of people rendered homeless in Dhapa landslide

Kolkata, Apr 24 (UNI) Scores of people were rendered homless at Dhapa on the E M Bypass on the outskirts of the city after landslides damaged many houses and roads since yesterday. The city's solid waste is dumped in Dhapa. Local people complained that landslides, triggered by excessive dumping of garbage, led to drying up of a pond. It also damaged many houses forcing the occupants to desert the place. However, no specific reason was known.....

Fire burns two, destroys houses

Kolkata, Apr 24 (UNI) At least two persons sustained burns and five houses were destroyed in a fire at Bansdroni in south Kolkata today. Five fire engines were pressed into serivce to douse the flames. The two injured were admitted to a government hospital. The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, police said.
