21 injured in grenade blasts,PDP candidate escapes unhurt in Kashmir

Baramulla, Apr 24 (UNI) People's Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Javid Ahmad Baig escaped unhurt when unidentified assailants hurled a hand grenade towards a polling booth at Wagoora in Sangrama assembly constituency, causing injuries to 16 voters and two security personnel.

A poll official and two voters were injured in a grenade blast at Palhalan in the Pattan assembly constituency where polling is underway for the byelections.

Official sources said unidentified assailants threw a hand grenade towards a polling booth set up in a Higher Secondary School at Wagoora in Sangrama constituency this afternoon.

Mr Baig, nephew of Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig, who had arrived there seconds before the blast, escaped unhurt.

Sources said 16 voters and two security personnel were injured in the blast and voting was disrupted for some time.

Later, a large number of voters present in the area protested against the incident.

The demonstrators raising anti PDP slogans alleged it was one of the supporter of Mr Baig hurled the grenade towards the voters.

Mr Baig is pitted against Shoaib Lone, supported by National Conference and a rebel PDP leader. Shoaib is son of late PDP leader and former minister Dr Ghulam Nabi Lone, who was killed in a militant attack at Tulsibagh last year.

Naveen visits hooch tragedy village; toll rises to 9

Berhampur, Apr 24 (UNI) Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today visited Golabandha village, where nine people have been killed so far after consuming spurious liquor during the last two days. Mr Patnaik accompanied by state Excise Minister Kalandi Behera and Energy Minister S N Patra visited the victims houses and consoled the bereaved family members. The Chief Minister announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10,000 to the next kin of those who died in the liquor.....

Wheat crop spread over 15 acres destroyed in fire

Phagwara, Apr 24 (UNI) The wheat crop spread over about 15 acres was destroyed in a major fire which broke out in four different wheat fields in nearby villages Ranipur and Nawanpind last night.
