4-Day long adventure exchange camp gets underway

Gangtok, Apr 14 (UNI) A four-day youth adventure exchange camp got underway at Rumtek, about 24 km from here today, with the participants imparted training on adventure activities.

At least thirty participants from Sikkim and West Bengal participated in the camp organised by Yak and Yeti Travels, Sikkim.

Youth Adventure Exchange Camp(YAEC) Director Satish Bardewa told newsmen that the objective of the camp was to promote nature conservation, culture and adventure through international friendship.

Mr Bardewa said lessons on outdoor activities like rock climbing, river rafting, mountain biking, first aid, environment conservation and rescue operation would be taught to the participants at Bulbuley near the capital town by expereinced and resourcesful persons.

He said the programme, to be held every year, was aimed at orienting the youth to establish a relation with the nature, conserve it, enhance the willpower, create a sense of team work and scope for self employment in the field of eco-tourism and adventure activities and to develop international friendship.

Mr Bardewa said on the last day of the camp 22 students and two teachers from the St John's College, Melbourne, Australia would arrive at the camp site to interact with the participants.

Tamils usher in new year

Chennai, Apr 14 (UNI) Tamils across the state today ushered in 'Viya,' the Tamil New year, with traditional fervour and gaiety. Special poojas, a variety of food preparations and social gatherings marked the new year celebration at most of the households. Wearing new clothes, people thronged famous temples, including Kapaleeswarar Temple and Parthasarathy Temple in the city, where special 'abhishekams' and poojas were performed on the occasion. Tamil New Year celebrated in Pondy

Pondicherry, Apr 14 (UNI) Tamil New Year's day was celebrated with traditional gaiety and enthusiasm here today. Dressed in new clothes, people exchanged greetings and offered prayers at temples. Long queues could be seen before the famous Manakkula Vinayagar Temple here since early morning. Good Friday observed in AP

Hyderabad, Apr 14 (UNI) People here observed Good Friday, marking the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, with traditional fervour. Early morning mass was held at all churches. Christians took part in prayers and observed the day with fasting and mourning. Bishop Joji of St Maris Church conducted the prayers which would continue till night in the city.
