Strong, motivated workforce must for achieving health goals

New Delhi, Apr 7 (UNI) Minister of State for Health Panabaka Lakshmi today called for a strong and motivated health workforce for achieving the goal of health for all in the country.

Releasing the World Health Report on the occasion of World Health Day here today, Ms Lakshmi said that proper planning and focus on training of health workers would ensure that the priority disease control programmes and health initiatives make the desired impact on the people for whom they are intended.

She said the WHO should not only facilitate documentation of innovative ways of tackling the complex problem of limited human and financial resource for health in different countries, but should also disseminate these innovative and effective ways, adopted by countries to educate, support and manage the health workforce.

She hoped that the key theme of 'Working together for Health' will encourage all stakeholders and policy makers, international donors, political leaders, health professionals, civil society, media and so on to unite and to work together to strengthen the health workforce.

Speaking on this occasion, Health Secretary P K Hota said that codification of various paramedical professionals need to be taken up and continuing education facility must be created to enable them improve their skills. He stressed the need for giving due recognition and dignity to the health care workers and their involvement in policy making to make their implementation more effective.

Mr Samlee Plianbangchang, Regional Director-South-East Asia of WHO, said that the educational policy for health professionals should ensure that there are adequate numbers of graduates to support the health systems. Teaching health professionals should be student-centered, emphasising the balance between institution and population-based interventions.

An early exposure to clinical and field practice settings will allow students to better understand the health needs of people in the community.

The theme 'Working together for health focuses on educating and training of health workers, supporting and protecting them, enhancing their effectiveness and tackling imbalances and inequities in the health workforce.
