SP to rake AMU issue in Parliament

Lucknow, Apr 7 (UNI) Samajwadi Party will rake up the issue of restoration of minority status to Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Parliament session starting from May 10.

Addressing a news conference here today, senior SP leader and former Union Minister Beni Prasad Verma blamed the Congress for disturbing secular credentials.

''Congress has taken several anti-minority steps after coming to power. The revocation of AMU minorty status is a burning example in this regard,'' he alleged.

The SP parliamentarian also charged Congress president Sonia Gandhi with trying to mislead the masses in the name of secularism.

''AMU cannot regain minority status unless a legislation is passed in Parliament and the Congress is well aware of this fact.'' UNI VS CH PC1638

Shiv Kapur qualifies for his maiden British Open appearance

EU confirms temporary halt to Palestinian aid

BRUSSELS, Apr 7 (Reuters) The European Commission confirmed today it had temporarily halted aid payments to the Hamas-led Palestinian governemnt pending a decision by European Union foreign ministers next week on future assistance. ''For the time being, there are no payments to or through the Palestinian Authority,'' Commission spokeswoman Emma Udwin told a news briefing. The EU's executive arm was adopting ''a policy of maximum prudence'' so as not to prejudge the ministers' discussion next.....

Djibouti sunken boat death toll rises to 72

DJIBOUTI, Apr 7 (Reuters) The death toll from a Djiboutian boat that sank carrying some 250 people on an annual religious pilgrimage has risen to 72 from 69, hospital officials said today. The wooden boat laden with construction materials and three times the passengers it was built for went under just as it had sailed 100 metres from the port in Djibouti yesterday.
