NEW YORK, Apr 7 (Reuters) Top-seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia cruised into the Amelia Island quarter-finals by beating unseeded American Meghann Shaughnessy 6-1 6-3.
Petrova led five of the top seven seeds into the last eight and will next face Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain who defeated Russian Elena Vesnina 6-4 3-6 6-4.
In the only upset yesterday, 15th seed Lucie Safarova stunned fellow Czech and fourth seed Nicole Vaidisova 6-1 4-6 6-4.
''I felt very good with my serve,'' Safarova told reporters.
''I struggled with it in the second set, but everything else felt very good.'' The 19-year-old Safarova, ranked 33rd in the world, took advantage of seven double faults by Vaidisova, who at 16 years of age is the youngest player in the top 100 on the WTA Tour.
Safarova's next opponent will be American Jill Craybas, who easily dispatched Julia Schruff of Germany 6-3 6-2.
Second-seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland overcame a stubborn Vera Dushevina of Russia 6-3 7-5.
