Kalam calls for compulsory legal education to students

Bangalore, Apr 7 (UNI) Calling for early introduction of legal education among students, President A P J Abdul Kalam today said it should be introduced as a compulsory subject for senior secondary students at 10+2 level to acquaint the young generation with their legal rights in society.

Speaking after launching the Project, ''Students Legal Literacy Clubs in various colleges in Karnataka,'' being organised by the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority, he said by introducing it as a subject, schools would be able to enhance the legal knowledge of the students and train them as law-abiding citizens. It would definitely reduce crime in society to a certain extent, if such awareness was brought at an early age.

He said the integration of the students community would also open up opportunities for safe childhood campaign. It would also promote social solidarity among the younger citizens who need to be sensitive towards the cause of the poor and the downtrodden and need to combat the social evils with the spirit of sportsmanship, he added.

Dr Kalam felt the Legal Literacy Clubs could become an important element in societal transformation, particularly as an enabler of protecting the rights of women and weaker sections of the society.

However, he stressed the need for improving general literacy among all people in the country, particularly women, before giving them legal literacy.

The President suggested that students of the Law college, lawyers, and experienced judges could conduct legal literacy programmes in the form of Seminars and Workshops in schools and colleges to create legal awareness.

He felt that legal literacy could definitely be an important tool for eradicating corruption from the society which was essential for transforming India into a developed nation before 2020.

Mr Kalam said one of the important objectives of legal literacy among the students should be to visit the villages on a weekly holidays, meet poor farmers and craftsmen and help them in solving their problems. This kind of help would enable them to lead a happy life and also prevent occurrence of unintentional crimes, he added.
