Haryana earmarks Rs 60 crore for upkeep of schools

Chandigarh, Apr 7 (UNI) The Haryana government has earmarked a sum of Rs 60 crore for the maintenance and repair of the government school buildings.

State Education Minister Phool Chand Mullana said the work of maintainance and repair of these schools would be completed by July next.

The state government, he said, was committed to provide all basic facilities in the schools and colleges with a view to imparting the qualitative education to the students.

He said drinking water and toilets facilities were being provided in the schools on war footing.

The Minister said the work for repair and maintainance of school buildings was being monitored by special committees constituted for this purpose.

China puts out 10-day-old forest blaze

Beijing, Apr 7: Thousands of Chinese firefighters helped by artificial rain have put out a forest blaze which raged across more than 1,000 hectares in the mountainous southwest, state media said today.Three villagers were injured and about 800 local residents were forced to evacuate after the fire broke out last Wednesday just a few km from Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province.''All flames were out by 11 this morning,'' state television said today, adding more than 6,000 firefighters.....

Restart of nuclear talks up to US: N Korea envoy

Tokyo, Apr 7: North Korea's top negotiator in six-way talks on Pyongyang's nuclear arms programme said today it is up to the United States to take steps to restart the stalled talks on the thorny topic.North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye-gwan arrived in Tokyo, where he will be joined next week by envoys from the other countries involved in the six-way talks, aimed at preventing a nuclear crisis on the Korean peninsula.Asked on arrival what he hopes.....

SYDNEY, Apr 7 (Reuters) Chris Guccione felled Max Mirnyi 7-6 3-6 7-5 3-6 6-4 to give Australia a shock 1-0 lead over Belarus in their Davis Cup quarter-final in Melbourne today. ''It's the biggest win of my career,'' Guccione told Australian television. ''In front of my home crowd there's no better feeling. I was very nervous but I relaxed into the match.''
