Govt amend constitution to facilitate reservations: SFI

New Delhi, Apr 7 (UNI) The Students Federation of India today said it was not against the proposed 27 per cent reservation of seats for the OBCs in central universities, IIMs, IITs and other educatioonal institutions and instead wanted the government to amend the constitution in this regard.

Stressing that reservation to OBCs were prevalent in several states, the SFI in a release said the government should bring a legislation to provide reservation in self-financing institutions.

The argument that reservation was against merit and brough sub-standard students to reputed institutions was baseless as they had to pass the "prescribed eligibility criteria," it added.

HP assembly passes private universities bill

Shimla, Apr 7 (UNI) The Himachal Pradesh Assembly today passed the HP Private Universities (Establishment and Regulation) Bill, 2006, in amended form, paving the way for the setting up of private universities in the state. The Bill was referred to the select committee on March 31 after the members pleaded that some of the clauses of the Bill have to be studied closely. President seeks judiciary to speedily dispose corruption cases

Bangalore, Apr 7 (UNI) President A P J Abdul Kalam today sought the judiciary of the country to help remove corruption. Inaugurating the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Karnataka High Court, the President lamented widespread corruption in the country and the apathy shown by children on the sourge of corruption on the society and said that the judiciary should speedily dispose of cases pertaining to corruption and help the cause.
