EU confirms temporary halt to Palestinian aid

BRUSSELS, Apr 7 (Reuters) The European Commission confirmed today it had temporarily halted aid payments to the Hamas-led Palestinian governemnt pending a decision by European Union foreign ministers next week on future assistance.

''For the time being, there are no payments to or through the Palestinian Authority,'' Commission spokeswoman Emma Udwin told a news briefing.

The EU's executive arm was adopting ''a policy of maximum prudence'' so as not to prejudge the ministers' discussion next Monday in Luxembourg, she said, adding Hamas has not yet met the international community's conditions of recognising Israel, renouncing violence and accepting past peace agreements.

DJIBOUTI, Apr 7 (Reuters) The death toll from a Djiboutian boat that sank carrying some 250 people on an annual religious pilgrimage has risen to 72 from 69, hospital officials said today. Mumbai, Apr 6 (UNI) ING Vysya Life Insurance has signed a whopping 44 tie-ups with co-operative banks in the states of Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashra, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttaranchal, for distributing its life insurance products. Inflation falls to 3.96 pc due to lower manufactured product price

New Delhi, Apr 7 (UNI) The annual rate of inflation fell to 3.96 per cent for the week ended March 25 as against 4.06 per cent during the previous earlier, due to lower prices of manufactured products. The inflation rate, calculated on point-to-point basis, stood at 5.10 per cent during the corresponding week last year, official figures released here said today. Finance Minister P Chidambaram had earlier said inflation would be 3.96 per cent......
