Delhi Chief Justice Katju elevated to Supreme Court

New Delhi, Apr 7 (UNI) Delhi High Court Chief Justice Markandeya Katju has been elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court.

President A P J Abdul Kalam has appointed Justice Katju as the Judge of the Supreme Court.

Before becoming the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, Justice Katju was the Chief Justice of the Chennai High Court.

Delhi High Court senior-most Judge Justice Vijender Jain will be taking over as the acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. Justice Katju had taken over as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court on October 12, 2005. Justice Katju (60) was also a judge of the Allahabad High Court before becoming the Chief Justice of the Chennai High Court.

He succeeded Justice B C Patel who retired in August this year.

Justice B A Khan, who took office as the acting Chief Justice, was transferred to Jammu and Kashmir as a Judge.

Born on September 20, 1946, Justice Katju got his law degree from Allahabad University in 1967.

He began his legal practice at the Allahabad High Court during which he specialised in labour laws, taxation and writ petitions.

He also served as a member in the International Association of Refugee Law Judges before being elevated as a judge in the Allahabad High Court.

Vehicles brought under heavy escorts due to blockade

IATA calls For EC directive on airports

Brussels, Apr 7 (UNI) The International Air Transport Association (IATA) appealed to the European Commission (EC) for a directive on robust national economic regulation of Europe's airports. New Delhi, Apr 7 (UNI) The Delhi unit of the Shiv Sena, alleging that fashion weeks were promoting "vulgar display" of women's body, demanded an immediate ban on them.
