Cong will secure absolute majority in Asom: APCC chief

Guwahati, Apr 7 (UNI) Asom Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhubaneswar Kalita today claimed that his party will secure an absolute majority in the assembly polls and form the next government.

Talking to newsmen here Mr Kalita said, ''people of Asom are mature enough to select a party and government that is secular, progressive and committed to the people of the state.'' Congress, he said, could proudly claim to have brought about harmony and peace among the various tribes and communities of Asom.

With the implementation of the Bodo accord,the Congress had brought peace in the earlier strife-torn Bodo areas and now the development in those areas is for all to see, he stated. Special attention and package had also been given to the tea tribe, he said.

Referring to the United Liberation Front of Asom, the APCC chief said, ''our party has also whole heartedly supported the peace talks with ULFA through the Peoples Action Group (PCG) and appreciates the efforts of Dr Indira Goswami. He hope to amicably solve the ULFA problem once and for all,'' he said.

With regards to the religious and linguistic minorities, the Congress, he said, was always been committed towards their all round development and had announced a special package for development in the sphere of education, health and economy. The Congress had fulfilled more than ninety per cent of its promises made in the last manifesto and is determined and committed to fulfil what had been targeted in the present dulaiation, he added.

Indian national killed in Maoists attack in Nepal

Kathmandu, Apr 7 (UNI) An Indian national was among the 13 people killed during the Maoists attack in Malangawa on Wednesday night. reports said.
