CM unhappy over "non-stoppage" of Babli work by Maharashtra

Nizamabad, Apr 7 (UNI) Expressing unhappiness over the ''non-stoppage of Babli Project works by Maharastra, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy today said his government would take all possible steps to halt the works.

''It is unfortunate that Maharashtra has not stopped the project work,'' Dr Reddy, who laid the foundation stone for the Pacharam main canal in the district, told reporters.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh had given an assurance to stop the project at a meeting held under the aegies of Union Water Resources Development Minister Saifuddin Soz, he recalled.

Saraswati Samman conferred on Gangopadhyay, Paniker

New Delhi, Apr 07 (UNI) The prestigious Saraswati Samman, instituted by the K K Birla Foundation for outstanding literary work in Indian languages, was conferred on eminent writers Sunil Gangopadhyay and K Ayyappa Paniker today. Foundation Chairman Mr Justice (Retd) G B Patnaik gave away the award, for years 2004 and 2005, at a simple function here. Prof Paniker's nephew Amrit Paniker accepted the award on behalf of his ailing uncle who received the award.....

Ponting somersaults, says Bangladesh deserve Test status

Dhaka, Apr 7 (UNI) Having earlier called for the dismissal of Bangladesh from Test cricket, Australian captain Ricky Ponting today did a complete volte-face, saying that the minnows were an improving side and deserved a place in the big league now. ''Bangladesh team is improving gradually and they deserved the Test status,'' he said while addressing a press conference at Sonargaon Hotel here today. Geraint Jones unlikely to play in Guwahati ODI

Kochi, Apr 7 (UNI) England wicketkeeper Geraint Jones is unlikely to play the fifth one-dayer against India at Guwahati on April 9 due to a strain he suffered on his left thigh while batting during yesterday's match here. England team management sources said Matt Prior, who took over Jones' job behind the stumps during India's innings yesterday, will keep the job for Sunday's match if Jones is ruled out.
