Aligarh riots: Death toll rises to 5, 2 officers suspended

Aligarh, Apr 7: The death toll in Aligarh riots rose to five with the recovery of one more body this morning, even as the indefinite curfew in the city areas continued for the second day.

Fresh incidents of violence were reported today from Bhujpura bypass after the corpse was recovered. A heavy police contigent was rushed to the spot to control the situation.

Meanwhile, chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav has ordered suspension of two senior district officials -- ADM (City) Satyabhan and SP (City) S K Verma -- with immediate effect for failing to control the violence.

D P Singh has been appointed the new SP (City) replacing Verma, who has been attached to the DGP office at Lucknow.

ADG (Law and Order) Padman Singh told UNI the situation was tense but under control.

A large contingent of police, Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and Rapid Action Force (RAF) jawans have been deployed in the curfew bound areas, he said.

Last rites of the four persons killed in the violence were held last night under tight security arrangements The violence took place in the sensitive Dahiwali Gali area yesterday afternoon, over a dispute pertaining to decoration at a makeshift temple for Ram Navmi. Incidents of firing and stone-pelting between two communities were reported.

Communal tension first sparked off Wednesday night, resulting in stone pelting, firing and destruction of public property in the area. Though the police quelled the violence, tension erupted once again yesterday and soon spread to other parts of the city.

Later, curfew was clamped on Kotwali, Sasni Gate, Delhi Gate, Banna Devi and Gandhi Park police circles.

At least 100 persons had so far been arrested in connection with the communal flare up, while a compensation of Rs five lakh each has been announced to the kin of the deceased.
