80 people to return to their original home after 13 years

Barasat, Apr 7(UNI) The Election Commision has asked the district administration to help 80 distressed people of Narayanpur village under Haroa Police Station in North 24 Parganas, who were evicted from their places of origin 13 years ago, official sources said here today.

These families were evicted following the killing of a local CPI(M) leader Lalit Mohan Mandal in 1993 and nine of them allegedly involved in the case.

The Election Commission has directed the district administration to ensure safe return of these people, who were politically victimised and evicted.

The fate of these families remained uncertain for several years as the district administration was in a dilemma about the future of the people.

Nine people were arrested for alleged involvement in a murder case in which Mandal was beheaded and his limbs were axed.

'' These people were rehabilitated. They were provided tent and their agricultural lands were illegally occupied. The adult members have lost their voting rights as their names were deleted,'' the local BDO said today.

The BDO said they would be provided tents tomorrow to rehabilitate them in presence of the police.

Meanwhile, altogether 18 people, including a sitting Trinamul Congress member Arjun Singh, filed nomination papers from 10 constituencies of Barrackpore Sub-Division in North 24 Parganas today, official source said.
