12 new polio cases in UP, 13 officials suspended

Lucknow, Apr 7 (UNI) Taking serious note of 12 new polio cases in the state this year, the Uttar Pradesh Government has suspended 13 health and family welfare department officials.

State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ahmad Hassan, addressing a press conference here today said that 12 new cases including six in Moradabad, two in Badayun and one each in Farrukhabad, Bareilly, Pilibhit and Bulandhshahar, have been reported this year.

Mr Hassan said, taking serious note of this alarming developmet 13 officials including the Deputy Chief Medical Officer have been suspended in Moradabad.

The minister further said that laxity in making UP polio free will not be tolerated at any cost and deviations in this regard will lead to strict action against concerned employees.

On the next phase of the pulse polio immunisation drive on April 9, the minister said that pulse polio immunisation drops will be administered to chidren aged upto five years, at a total of 1,06,160 polio booths are made in the state. As many as 17,480 health workers will be deployed at the booths, he added.

Mr Hassan said that 59,915 mobile squads comprising 1,76,746 health workers will go door to door to administer the Polio drops to children.

In addition to this over 10,000 mobile/transit teams will also be pressed into service to administer the drops to children on board buses, trains and busy market places, Mr Hassan added.

7 injured in bomb explosion in Chhattisgarh

Jagdalpur, Apr 7: Seven people, including two Special Police Officers,(SPD) were injured when an improvised explosive device attached to a corpse exploded today in the naxal-affected Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh, police said.Two persons, who were seriously injured in the explosion at village Bharpal near Bhairamgarh, had been admitted to Bharamgarh hospital, police said.Police said naxalites killed a villager and kept the body laced with IED on the road to trap police personnel. HC vacates stay on Nakkeeran

Chennai, Apr 7 (UNI) Madras High Court today vacated the interim injunction restraining Nakkeeran, a Tamil weekly magazine, from publishing articles allegedly defamatory in nature, against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and her close aide Sasikala Natarajan, with conditions. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice A P Shah and Ms Justice Prabha Sridevan vacated the interim injunction granted by a Single Judge while allowing an appeal filed by R R Gopal, Nakkeeran Editor......

Man axes his wife to death

Akola, Apr 7 (UNi) Man axed his wife to death at Kalwadi village here following heated arguments between them. Madhukar Weule (50) had a fight with his wife Shashikala follwing which he attacked with an axe yesterday, killing her instantly, police said. He went to the police and surrendered before them. He told the police that he suspected his wife of indulging in prostitution. UNI XR KU AG1728.....
