Ms Mayawati, who visited Meher's residence yesterday, said her family members and public at large were united in favour of a CBI probe. ''During the meeting with the Bhargava family members, it was revealed that the real culprits are moving scot free.'' Alleging the culprits had direct patronage of Samajwadi Party, she asked if it was not correct them why was Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav not conceding to demands for CBI inquiry into the matter.
Requesting the Governor's intervention in this regard, she asked him to direct the UP government to grant permission for the probe.
Bhargava was shot by miscreants in the busy Hazratganj area, barely few yards away from the office of the Superintendent of police when she objected to lewd remarks passed on her daughter-in-law on February 28 last.
She was partially paralysed following the bullet wound and breathed last at a hospital in the national Capital.
Meanwhile, Congress also sent a memorandum to the Governor asking for legal action in view of poor law and order in UP.
The memorandum, signed by AICC general secreatry and in charge of UP affairs Ashok Gehlot, UPCC president Salman Khurshid, AICC secretary Praveen Rahstrapal and senior state leaders Pramod Tiwari and Ram Naresh Yadav, sought his help in getting rid of the ''jungle raj'' prevailing in the state.
It also reminded the Governor of the general perception among the public that the present ruling dispensation was trying to save the culprits in Meher Bhargava killing case.
Earlier, Congress had organsied a demonstration at GPO park in the state capital to protest the incident.
