Lucknow, Mar 25 (UNI) Shreya Maheshwari of the Uttar Pradesh capital today won the prestigious Classmate Young Author 2005 award for her story 'Stairway to Nowhere'.
Shreya is the second Lucknow girl to receive this award after Jyoti Iyer, who won in 2004. The winner gets seven days free tour to London.
The class XII student of Loreto Convent was feted for her story 'Stairway to Nowhere' in Mumbai by a jury comprising noted writers Nandita Puri, Neeru Nanda, Alpana Chaudhary, Bakthiar Dadabhoy headed by Ruskin Bond.
Shreya was one of the 1,20,000 children competitors for the award.
Another Lucknow girl, Ayushi Singh from Class XII of City Montessori School figured among the top 16 entries.
Niyati Gandhi, Class XI, Utpal Shanghvi School, Mumbai won the Jury Special Mention Award.
Megha Bagaria, Class XI, La Martiniere for Girls, Kolkata was awarded the first runner-up (Story: www.electronicencounters.com), Shreya Devnath, Class X, Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan, Chennai as second runner up (Story: Incognito) and Ritu Nichani, Class IX, G D Matric Higher Sec School, Coimbatore (Story: Dream Factory) as the Jury Special Mention Award at the CYAC 2005.
Last year in 'Classmate Young Author Contest (CYAC) 2004, Ms Jyoti Iyer of Lucknow was adjudged 'The Classmate Young Author 2004' for her story Post Box No. 99. She was awarded a seven-day trip to England for a literary tour covering London, Oxford, tratford-upon-Avon and Edinburgh.
Ruskin Bond, Chairman, National Jury, said CYAC had resulted in a surge of interest among young authors.
''The variety of themes on which children wrote this year brings to light creativity, imagination, inventiveness and skill with words that is only waiting to be discovered and recognised.'' He said Shreya's story displays a rare talent.
