Tension in Bengal's steel city after death of a patient

Durgapur, Mar 25 (UNI) Tension ran high in this steel city of West Bengal after an irate mob ransacked a private nursing home to vent anger following the death of a patient during operation, police said today.

The trouble started after Satyabrata Deb (45), who was administered anaesthesia before a surgery on his finger, died on the table at midnight last night at the city centre here.

Relatives of the victim alleged negligence on the part of the surgeons which led to untimely death of the patient.

Police had detained Dr Partha Chandra, Dr Jiban Chatterjee and Dr Hiramuni Singh, who were later released following pressure from the members of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), local unit, who had gheraoed the local police station.

IMA members demanded arrest of those responsible for ransacking the nursing home in which Dr Singh, medical Superintendent of BPL hospital, received minor injuries. They said the medicos would go on an indefinite strike if the vendals were not arrested by next 48 hours.

Additional police force was deployed in the area to instill confidence among the medicos.

Two die, three injured in road accident in Durgapur

Durgapur, Mar 25 (UNI) Two masons were killed and three critically injured when a tractor in which they were travelling turned on a side following a tyre burst in this steel town of Burdaman district of West Bengal today. Police said the accident occurred when the five masons travelling on the tractor came under the vehicle after one of its front tyres burst. Encounter between security personnel and militants in Manipur

Imphal, Mar 25 (UNI) An encounter took place today at Baruni Hills, in Imphal east between combined force of the Police, Assam Rifles and suspected militants at Baruni Hills here. Police said a police team led by a senior DIG of Manipur Police along with Assam Rifles personnel launched an operation in the area after a brief encounter between the police and the militants. Two militants surrender

Baramulla, Mar 25 (UNI) Two Kashmiri militants surrendered before security forces immediately after crossing over to this side in Uri sector, official sources said. Mudasar Ahmad Zargar and Gowhar Majeed, resident of Tanmarg, entered this side from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) early this morning near Kaman post in Uri sector, sector added.
