Public asked to preserve historical monuments

Gulbarga, Mar 25 (UNI) Karnataka Legislative Council Chief Whip Vittal Herur today called upon the people of the district to protect the historical and famous monuments here to preserve its rich heritage, cultural diversity and history for posterity.

Addressing a two-day conference on the 'History and Archaeology of Gulbarga District' here, he said it was decided to start a study centre of social reformer Devaradasimayya at Hampi Kannada University.

Inaugurating the conference, jointly organised by the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, the district administration and Gulbarga University, varsity Acting Vice-Chancellor Partapsingh Tiwari said there were a number of historical monuments in the Hyderabad- Karnataka region. It was necessary to take up research and documentation on the bygone era to enable the future generation to know about the culture and traditions of their ancestors.

Historian and Writer Surayanath Kamat, who presided over, called upon the literary and research scholars to dig into history and bring out the rich culture and tradition of the past.

The conference is the fifth in a series of ones organised in all the 27 districts in the State.

Ribeiro calls for mechanism to monitor police performance

Mumbai, Mar 25 (UNI) Establishment of a mechanism to monitor and evaluate police performance should be included in the draft of the new police act, former Mumbai Police Commissioner J F Ribeiro said today.
