Living Steel partnering with Bengal Shrachi

Kolkata, Mar 25: Living Steel, a global programme managed by the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI), today (Mar 25, 2006) signed a deal with Bengal Shrachi, a real estate developer in Kolkata.

The MOU was signed by IISI, Bengal Shrachi and Tata Steel.

The MOU outlines the partnership between Living Steel, a worlwide consortium managed by IISI to address global housing challenge, and Bengal Shrachi to demonstrate sustainable steel housing here, Living Steel Programme director Scott Chubbs told reporters.

The housing would be constructed based on the winning entry selected from the international architectural competition sponsored by Living Steel in association with International Union of architects.

Ten architectural firms round the world are preparing their designs for the Kolkata housing, having six-to eight apartments for high income group (HIG), which will be judged in May this year at Brussels by an international jury comprising of international architects Charles Correa, Glenn Murcutt, Andrew Ogorzalek, Jaime Lerner, James berry and Nicholas de Monchaux.

"The MOU represents an important step in the efforts to show the versality and strength of steel in meeting housing needs around the world," Mr Chubbs said.

"Steel addresses the desire for good quality, energy efficient and improved environmental performance in housing construction," Mr Anand Sen, Vice-president, Flat Products, Tata Steel, said.

Living Steel, the five year programme adopted by Arcelor, Baosteel, BlueScope Steel, Celsa Group, Corus, Erdemir, IMIDRO, Mittal Steel, Posco, Ruukki and Tata Steel, is also looking at replicating the programme at Africa, Europe and South America.
