India needs professionals in nuclear energy: Kakodkar

Hyderabad, Mar 25: Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) Chairman and Secretary to Department of atomic energy Dr Anil Kakodkar today (Mar 25, 2006) asserted that 'the country needed professionals for supporting the growth of India's power programme which was destined to be of larger magnitude in the coming decades'.

Delivering 22nd convocation address of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) here, Dr Kakodkar pointed out a paradigm shift in terms of scale of working and diversity of activities that we would need to handle.

This is a major human resource challenge, he said.

Stating that nuclear energy was an option which can provide a millionfold increase in energy per unit of mass extracted from the earth, he said access to such large energy with minimum use of earth resources and negligible or minimum adverse impact on earth's environment was also a challenge before the country.

Observing that Homi Bhabha National Institute which would be focussing on research at the interface of scientific enquiry and its application, he said the students would have to carry out research under two guides, one engaged in research and the other in technology development in the institute.

Rice questions why Saudi might need nuke energy

Washington, Dec 16: US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice today questioned why oil-rich Saudi Arabia might want nuclear power and said she wanted to know more about plans by Gulf states to study nuclear energy. ''I'd like to know more about it and I think it's something that we should have discussions (about),'' Rice told Reuters when asked about the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council's decision to study a possible joint civil atomic program......
