Farmers' suicides continue unabated in Vidarbha

Yavatmal, Maharashtra, Mar 25 (UNI) As many as 22 debt-ridden farmers have committed suicide in different parts of Vidarbha region in recent times, taking the death toll to 395 since June last, claims a non-governmental organisation Jan Andolan Samiti.

Sucides deaths by farmers have continued unabated in the region despite the visit by two fact-finding committees to the region and the State Government's announcement of a special Rs 1,070 crore package, the organisation has claimed.

Noted Gandhian Nirmala Deshpande had also led a delegation, which had apprised Prime Minister Manmomah Singh of the situation in the region.

National Agriculture Commission chairman Dr M S Swaminathan had led a four-member committee to the region for an on-the-spot survey.

The committee has submitted a report to the Union Government recommending a minimum support price of Rs 3,000 per quintal for cotton and imposition of high import duty on cotton being imported from abroad.

A committee, headed by Planning Commission advisor Adarsha Mishra, had also visited the region.

Magistrate to decide deportation of Dutch national

Mumbai, Mar 25 (UNI) The Ministry of External Affairs has appointed an Inquiry Magistrate in New Delhi to decide on deportation of Dutch national Dharmendra Bijayaprasad Debi, 35, accused of murdering two people in his home country in 2004. Arrested by Mumbai police from Bangalore on January 30, the accused was handed over to the Delhi police by a city court on Thursday. Situation under control in Karnal village, say authorities

Karnal, Mar 25 (UNI) The situation in Mehmadpur village of Karnal district is under control, authorities today said. A spokesman for the administration said that the dispute between the two groups of the village was sorted out successfully in presence of the panchayat. He said the problem started when a few anti-social elements tried to set four houses in the village on fire. Before the problem could take a serious turn, the district police reached there.....

George Tirkey, 116 others sent to jail in Adhunik Metalick case

Rourkela, Mar 25 (UNI) Former BJD MLA George Tirkey and 116 tribals involved in yesterday's attack on Adhunik Metalick at Kuanarmunda were arrested today after their bail applications were rejected by the court. The tribals, led by Mr Tirkey forced their way into the plant and went on a rampage, damaging assets and attacking the officials. They were demanding employment of the local people in the plant.
