Direct procurement from farmers to be disallowed in Punjab

Patiala, Mar 25 (UNI) Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today said no procurement agency will be allowed to carry out direct procurement from farmers in the state.

Addressing a gathering of Aarhtias (Commission Agents) from all over the state he said Aarhtias along with the Punjab farmers heralded green revolution in mid 60s and the emotional bonds of understanding between these two communities were very strong. He added the state government would protect their rights at any cost.

Showing Punjab Government's committment to the farming community, he talked about an Agriculture Diversification Infrastructure Development Fund of Rs100 crore.

Capt Singh said the Government had also tied up with ITC, Bharti and Reliance to set up retail outlets and cold chains to export fruits and vegetables.

''Government's efforts are on to promote agro based farming and processing to encourage farmers to shift from conventional wheat paddy rotation to cash crop like oilseeds, vegetables with value addition,'' he added.

He asked the Aarhtias to insure perfect liaison with the farming community in order to motivate them by lifting their produce through paying handsome cash.

He said Punjab had an extensive marketing network with the proven record of transparency and accountability in trades, which could further motivate the farmers to go for diversification in agriculture.

Referring to the demands of the Aarhtias, Capt Singh said the procedure for filing of sale tax assessment would be made simple for them to avoid unnecessary harassment. He said one representative of Aarhtias would be included in Mandi Board with a view to giving due representation to Aarhtia Community.
