Chennai, Mar 25 (UNI) Amid the controversy surrounding the Deemed universities over the ''AICTE issue'', the All India Medical and Engineering Colleges Association (AIMECA) today demanded that the status given to them be withdrawn immediately.
Association President T D Naidu, in a statement here alleged that the powers conferred were misused in all respects by the deemed universities and autonomous colleges, and the status should be withdrawn forthwith.
All these colleges should be affiliated to their parent universities who may monitor the functioning of the colleges and protect the interest of the students and their career, he suggested.
Recently, Anna University Vice-Chancellor Vishwanathan had also suggested that these universities, which were facing problems after the AICTE came out with the controversial notification, could get them affiliated to the university.
Mr Naidu said the regulations and syllabus framed by deemed universities were not forwarded to the competent authorities for approval. The net result was that the competent authorities were kept in the dark about the courses offered by them.
He alleged that the examinations were also not conducted in a transparent manner. With lowqualified teachers being entrusted with the job of correcting the papers, the standard of education and career of the students was put in peril, he said.
Charging the deemed universities of not following the eligibility norms, while admitting students, he said if the stipulated intake for a particular course was 60, about 200 students were admitted to the course and packed in a single class room.
Many deemed universities have not constituted the Board of studies and the Academic council, which were the higher authorities for framing the regulations and syllabus of the courses as per the norms of AICTE, Medical Council of India (MCI) and University Grants Commission (UGC), he pointed out.
