Chhattisgarh, Calcutta qualify for quarter-finals

Chandigarh, Mar 25 (UNI) Chhattisagarh Calcutta, hosts Bhakra and Beas Management Board, Punjab State Electricity Board, Haryana Vitran Prasaran Nigam Limited, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh advanced to the quarter-finals of the 32nd All India Electricity Boards Hockey Tournament here today.

Calcutta recorded two victories today to top A. In the morning session, they outplayed Chhattisgarh by 5-0 after leading 3-0 at half time. Later in the evening, Calcutta routed Andhra Pradesh Tranco by 3-0.

Calcutta dominated against Chhattisgarh and forced eight penalty corners in the 60-minute stipulated period. However, they showed poor penalty corner conversion technique as they wasted these opportunities. However, the Calcutta forwards scored five field goals. A Tirkey contributed two by scoring in the 27th and 29th minute. S Majhi (25th), K Kujur (36th) and S Tarapfdar (37th) contributed one goal each.

Despite the defeat, Chhattisgarh also qualified for quarter-final with one win and one loss.

Later, Calcutta logged full points at the expense of AP Tranco whom they beat by 3-0 after gaining 1-0 lead in the first half. A Tikrey (4th), R Rajbhar (32nd) and S Saha (38th) scored one goal each.

In a pool C last league outing, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board gave a hockey lesson to Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation by handing them a 7-0 drubbing. Captain Illango (31 st and 54th minutes) and Suresh Kumar (38th and 50th) scored two goals each for the winners. Ganesh Moorthy (14th), Muruganesan (22nd) and Slukumaran (55 th) made one goal each to swell the winners' victory margin.

Australia take control of second test

DURBAN, South Africa, Mar 25 (Reuters) Michael Hussey's steady batting and quick strikes by bowlers Brett Lee and Michael Kasprowicz earned Australia control of the second test against South Africa in Durban today. Australia, who won the toss and chose to bat, were dismissed for 369. South Africa had dwindled to 43 for two at tea on the second day. 38 pc polling in Kauriram Assembly bypoll

Gorakhpur, Mar 25 (UNI) An estimated 38 per cent polling was recorded in Kauriram Assembly byelection in Uttar Pradesh which concluded on a peaceful note, here today.
