Chellakumar supporters storm TNCC headquarters, 12 injured

Chennai, Mar 25 (UNI) A day after former Congress MLA Dr Chellakumar was suspended from the party for anti-party acitivites, his supporters today ''stormed'' TNCC headquarters Sathyamurthy Bhavan and clashed with partymen, protesting against the suspension.

Atleast 12 supporters of Dr Chellakumar were injured in a bloody clash with the loyalists of TNCC President M Krishnasamy and police lathicharge, when they tried to force their way into the Sathyamurthy Bhavan this morning.

Even as ticket seekers for the May eight assembly elections started visiting the party headquarters, the supporters of Dr Chellakumar, suddenly descended at the office premises in vans and tried to barge into the office.

When partymen led by Royapuram Mano and Govindasamy, district secretaries of North and Central Chennai, respectively resisted the rival group's move, tension mounted and soon they clashed with each other.

In the ensuing clash, they attacked each other, using wooden logs, tube lights,sticks and stones. In a filmy style act, one person was seen raining blows and kicking down rival group men, like a stunt master. Atleast ten people, who were supporters of Dr Chellakumar sustained bleeding injuries in the clash.

On being chased away, the supporters re-grouped themselves and again tried to barge into the TNCC headquarters, triggering tension.

This time, the police, who were posted outside, entered the scene and lathicharged them, injuring atleast two persons.

No senior Congress leader, incluidng Mr Krishnasamy was present when the incident took place in front of the office premises.

The TNCC President, on the directive of Mr Moily, had suspended Dr Chellakumar, for instigating his supporters to burn the effigies of party leader Veerappa Moily, who is in-charge of party affairs in the state for not getting winnable seats from the DMK. They had also burnt effigies of DMK President M Karunanidhi.

This was the second time Chellakumar's supporters had created a ruckus in front of TNCC headquarters. On the very first day when Mr Krishnasamy assumed office, they had forced their way in and smashed glass panes.

At that time they protested against the move to appoint Mr Karthik Chidambaram, son of Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram as Youth Congress President.
