538 papers filed for Phase-11 Asom polls

Guwahati, Mar 25 (UNI) Altogether 538 nominations were filed for the second phase of Asom polls, slated for April 10.

Over 300 nominations were filed yesterday on the last day of filing papers for the final phase of polling in the state.

Prominent among those who filed nominations yesterday were AGP president Brindabon Goswami, former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, Minister of state for Home Rockibul Hussain and president Badruddin Azmal, the perfume magnet.

Altogether 61 constituencies are scheduled to go to the polls in the second phase in which 82,27,631 voters will exercise their franchise.

Ayodhya fidayeen attack case posted for Apr 3

Faizabad, Mar 25 (UNI) The court today posted the hearing in the July 5, 2005 Ayodhya fidayeen attack case for April 3 and extended the judicial custody of all the five accused by eight days. The terrorists were produced before Faizabad District Judge R P Shukla from Allahabad's Naini Jail under tight security arrangements this morning. According to the government counsel O P Sinha, the fixing of charges against the accused could not be taken up.....

Speaker suspends case till SC ruling received

Lucknow, Mar 25 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey today suspended the hearing in the case related to defection of 40 BSP MLAs to the ruling Samajwadi Party in 2003 till further order. Mr Pandey in his ruling said he would decide the next date of hearing only after yesterday's Supreme Court order was received. Ribeiro calls for mechanism to monitor police performance

Mumbai, Mar 25 (UNI) Establishment of a mechanism to monitor and evaluate police performance should be included in the draft of the new police act, former Mumbai Police Commissioner J F Ribeiro said today. Addressing a meeting on police reforms here, Mr Ribeiro said the draft should also ensure appropriate executive direction, levels of accountability and inclusion of human rights violations as offences. ''There is an urgent need to replace the colonial Police Act of 1861.....
