VANI calls for National Policy on NGOs

Kolkata, Mar 10 (UNI) Voluntary Action Network India(VANI), an apex national association of 2,200 voluntary organizations in 24 states, has requested the Planning Commission to frame a national policy on the role of voluntary organisations, besides establishing a national coordinaton committee for Disaster Management.

Vani, which also enjoys a special consultative committee status of the United Nations(UN),besides having close working relationships with various overseas NGO federations in Europe, Latin America, Africa and South Asia, has recently been engaged in various works in a number of states and with central ministries for creating a suitable environment in the country for smooth functioning of the voluntary sector.

Some of the other important issues that VANI is currently dealing with various stakeholders include the contribution of the civil society institutions in the national gross domestic product(GDP).

In the past VANI also organized consultations and information campaigns on several issues like Structural Adjustment Programme, Communal Harmony and Panchayati Raj.

To promote good governance practices in voluntary sector VANI is now organizing a two day workshop in Kolkata from today. A large number of NGOs who are participating in the workshop would also take part in a number of debates, discourses with a view to improving legitimacy, transparency and accountability in voluntary sector, a VANI release here said.

Haryana govt for implementation of Citizen's Charter

Chandigarh, Mar 10 (UNI) The Haryana government has directed the heads of all departments to accelerate the process of formulation and effective implementation of Citizens's Charter in order to provide information about the services provided by their department to the citizens of the state. A spokesman of the Administrative Reforms department here today said that Citizen's Charter is a document, which lists the services provided by the organization to the citizens and the procedure.....

Student body recovered, search continues for another

Vijayawada, Mar 10 (UNI) The body of a student who was washed away in the gushing waters of Bandar Canal yesterday was recovered near the American Hospital in the city today. Police said the body of Vijay Kumar (18) was sent to the University Government hospital for post-mortem. Search operation was on to trace the body of Vajral Varun Sai, who was also swept away. Minister statement on MSP draws angry protests from oppn

Hyderabad, Mar 10 (UNI) The opposition TDP, CPI(M), CPI and TRS today protested against the statement of Andhra Pradesh Marketing Minister Botsa Satyanarayana that cotton, chilli and maize farmers were getting more than the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and all the farmers in general were happy under the ''farmer-friendly Congress rule.'' Replying to a question by P Keshav and K Balarama Krishna Murty, the Minister said the farmers were getting more than the MSP.....
