Transparency and accountablity essence of democracy: Habibullah

Dehradun, Mar 10 (UNI) Chief Information Commissioner Wajahat Habibullah today said transparency and accountability are the essence of democracy.

In his keynote address at a seminar on 'The Right to Information Act 2005', organised by Uttaranchal Lok Ayukta Justice S H A Raza and Citizen Action Group here, Mr Habibullah said the Right To Information Act (RTI) will ensure that information about government functioning is accessible to the all citizens of the country.

''In democracy, the government is created by the people and therefore it is accountable to them,'' he said.

Mr Habibullah said information can also be provided in local languages as has been prescribed in the Act.

''Ironically it is not being done particularly in the larger states,'' he said, adding the Act has been implemented in 20 states out of the total 28.

Uttaranchal Governor Sudarshan Agarwal, who was also present, said he was hopeful that the Act will help the common man.

Stay on Salman's one year sentence

Jodhpur, Mar 10 (UNI) A local court here has stayed the sentence of one year imprisonment awarded to actor Salman Khan in the black buck killing case. Acting District and Sessions Magistrate Yashpal Choudhury while admitting Salman's appeal against the sentence yesterday, has stayed the sentence. The next hearing will be held on April 12. Chief Judicial Magistrate Brijendra Kumar Jain had sentenced Salman to one year imprisonment and imposed a penalty of Rs 5000 on.....

VAT to be introduced in Jharkhand from April

Ranchi, Mar 10 (UNI) Finance Minister Ragubor Das today announced that Value Added Tax (VAT) would be introduced in Jharkhand from April one. Presenting the budget for 2006-07 in the assembly, he also said businessmen having annual turnover of up to Rs 50,000 lakhs would enjoy optional process of tax returns. He also announced that Jharkhand would be developed as a herbal state. In all 20 of the 22 districts were earlier brought under national rural.....

Dog carries away abandoned new-born in Kashmir

srinagar, Mar 10 (UNI) People outside a maternity hospital were shocked when they saw a dog carrying a new-born baby in its mouth. The dog dropped the dead baby after the people chased it near the Lala Ded Hospital in the Civil Lines area here.
