Reformation of education system needed

Aizawl Mar 10: The Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), the state's apex students' body, has appealed to the government for reforming the education system in the state.

In an executive meeting held here today, MZP has expressed concern over the lack of students in government-run schools at the primary level while English medium schools are overcrowded and has suggested several remedies for this.

The MZP came to the conclusion that the best and easiest remedy available would be to amalgamate those schools in rural areas which have few students.

Another remedy suggested for better education by the committee was to let senior teachers off through a voluntary retirement scheme while teachers fit to teach in English medium schools be recruited in their places.

MZP members said the matter of the declining quality in education has caused great concern not only for the students and parents, but for the government as well.

''The government spends large amounts of money every year in salaries and maintenance of schools but gets a small percentage of the students campared to English medium schools where teachers are employed at a much lower salary than the government. Therefore, there is a need for the public to help out the government and the government to act as necessary'', the MZP said.
