See through motive of proposed UP law: Cong to Governor

New Delhi, Mar 10 (UNI) Strongly objecting to the UP government's move to enact a law to take 80 posts out of the purview of the ''office of profit'', the Congress today appealed to Governor T V Rajeswar to closely scrutinise the proposed legislation before giving his assent.

Instead of being for the people, by the people and of the people, the Bill, which the Mulayam Singh Yadav government had it passed in the Assembly yesterday, was for ''Chairmen of undertakings, by corporate socialists and of Bollywood stars,'' party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters.

He contended that the move, coming in the wake of the Election Commission's recommendation to President A P J Abdul Kalam for the disqualification of Samajwadi Party Rajya Sabha member Jaya Bachchan for holding an office of profit, was tantamount to pre-empting decision-making by the highest Constitutional authority.

Pointing out that the President had forwarded a similar complaint against another SP member of Rajya Sabha, Mr Amar Singh, to the EC, Mr Singhvi said it had proved beyond doubt that the SP government in UP was not for, by or of the people.

It was rather a government of ''Azam Khan (UP Parliamentary Affairs Minister who piloted the Bill yesterday), for Amar Singh and (run) by Jaya Bachchan,'' Mr Singh said.
