Sarita calls for relook at rehabilitation measures for disabled

Mysore, Mar 10 (UNI) The National Policy on Rehabilitation has recognised the rapid changes in the area and decided to bring amendments to the Disabled Persons Act, Ms Sarita Prasad, Secretary, Union Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry, informed today.

Inaugurating the two-day national meet of Rehabilitation Experts here, she said the draft of the proposed amendments to the Act were ready and the text had been placed on the website and suggestions invited.

She opined that the country's population had to be analysed for different kinds of disabilities and focus should be on the manpower needs to address the task of rehabilitation.

Stating that India had more than 20 million disabled people, but only 28,000 professionals to treat them, Ms Prasad said there was an urgent need to increase the number of professionals in the country.

New information and communication technologies needed to be introduced to attract more professionals in the area of rehabilitation, she added.

With the rise in the number of people with poor vision and multiple disabilities, the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) need to implement new strategies to cope with the situation, she said.

Nearly 150 professionals were attending the meet organised by the RCI and All India Institute of Speech and Hearing here.

Court reserves ACP Kadam's bail order till Monday

Mumbai, Mar 10 (UNI) Special Anti-Corruption Bureau Judge S P Mahajan today reserved the bail order of the suspended Assistant Commissioner of Police Baban Kadam to March 13. Kadam, who is presently in judicial custody till March 24, was produced in the court this afternoon. The ACB sleuths have registered a case against him in February for allegedly amassing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income. In the court, defence counsel Majeed Memon argued.....

PWD Chief Engineer kidnapped

Guwahati, Mar 10 (UNI) A top PWD official of Asom Government was kidnapped in the early hours today by unidentified miscreants, sending shockwaves amongst the bureaucracy. According to official source, PWD Chief Engineer (National Highway) Suren Das was abducted from his home early in the morning. It is not yet clear who kidnapped him as no one had claimed responsibility for the act. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had instructed the police authorities.....

Huge cache of firearms recovered in Patna

Patna, Mar 10 (UNI) A cache of firearms, including live cartridges of AK-47 rifle were recovered under Pirbahore police station area here today. Senior Police Superintendent of Patna Kundan Krishnan said two hand grenades, few detonators, a revolver, a double barrel gun, a pump rifle and 600 live cartridges including 20 AK-47 rifles were recovered from a fire arms shop. Police arrested an anti social, Ram Yadav of Gazipur town in Uttar Pradesh in this.....
