PIL seeking president's rule in UP

Lucknow, Mar 10 (UNI) Hearing a PIL seeking President's Rule in Uttar Pradesh and handing over the security of public and religious places to the Centre, Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court today directed the state principal secretary home to file his confidential report on March 27.

The order was passed by Justices Jagdish Bhalla and D V Sharma on a PIL filed by a Lucknow-based lawyer, Ranjana Bajpai.

The petitioner contended that the security of places of worship and public places such as courts and cinema houses was under threat after the Varanasi bomb blasts.

Rains, lightening claim 27 lives in Maharashtra

Mumbai, Mar 10 (UNI) Hailstorms and unseasonal rains, accompanied by lightening and thunder, have claimed 27 lives, and left a trail of disaster across fields in central and western Maharashtra, destroying standing crops worth crores of rupees, since March 3. Fourteen people have died in central Maharashtra's backward region of Marathwada, while 13 lost lives in western region of Vidarbha, police and official sources said. CBI to probe pvt of power distribution

New Delhi, Mar 10 (UNI) With Delhi Assembly accepting two Public Accounts Committee reports that indicated irregularities in privatisation of power distribution in the national capital and issuance of 'Smart Cards' state Transport Department and recommended CBI probe, the agency will shortly taken up the issues for investigaiton. Rain havoc kills 71 across country

New Delhi, Mar 10 (UNI) Rains lashed several parts of the country, killing 39 persons in Madhya Pradesh, 27 in Maharashtra and 5 in Rajasthan so far, with the most extensive damage having occurred in Madhya Pradesh. In Madhya Pradesh, downpours extensively damaged wheat, gram and lentil crop. Commissioner (Agricultural Production) Iqbal Ahmed told UNI that crops were affected by showers and hail in 34 of 48 districts. ''The affected area is 35,000 hectares. At least.....
