Nepalese protesters rounded up in Shimla

Shimla, Mar 10 (UNI) Several members of the Nepalese People's Rights Protection Committee were detained here minutes after they told reporters that their struggle for democracy would continue in Nepal, and denying their involvement in pasting Maoists posters in the town.

The Committee had called a press conference yesterday to reiterate their resolve to continue with their struggle for democracy and the overthrow of the monarchy, which, it said, was responsible for abject poverty in the country.

However, Committee's general secretary D P Sapkota, President Kamal Kardka and several others were rounded off for investigating their possible links with the Maoists after the press meet.

Ironically, Mr Sapkota earlier told reporters that the Shimla Police was harassing their members for their alleged links with the Maoists.

Shimla ASP Virender Kumar confirmed that although the organisation was not involved in any illegal activity, but their links with the terrorist organisation could not be ruled out.

He said for now the Police would confirm whether they had registered themselves here, adding that strict action would be taken against them if they were residing in the state without registration.

The Police was also confirming their involvement in the Maoists posters that made appearance at several places in Shimla district during the last few days, he added.
