Nearly 20 mln pounds of record UK heist found-police

LONDON, Mar 9 (Reuters) Nearly 20 million pounds of the 53 million stolen last month in the biggest cash heist in British history has now been recovered, police said today.

A Kent police spokesman said a haul recovered at an address in Southborough, near Tonbridge, southern England, at the weekend had been counted and confirmed as 8.6 million pounds.

''That brings the total recovered so far to 19.7 million pounds,'' he said.

The money was stolen in an armed raid on the Securitas depot in Tonbridge on February 22.

A gang posing as police officers seized the manager of the depot, took his wife and son hostage and threatened to kill them unless he helped them get inside the compound.

The stash to found after the robbery was 1.3 million, discovered in a white transit van, followed by smaller cash amounts in several other searches.

The largest single haul was 9.6 million uncovered when detectives raided industrial premises in Welling, south London.

A number of people have been arrested, but only five have so far been charged in connection with the raid.
