Month-long Orchid show begins in Gangtok from March 18

Gangtok, Mar 10 (UNI) In a bid to lure holiday makers in this mountaineous state, the Sikkim Flower Committee (SFC) in co-operation with the Forest and Tourism department will organise a month-long Orchid show here from March 18.

SFC Chairman S T Lachungpa yesterday said the show besides having participants from the state and the neighbouring states, tourists from far flung areas, are expected in this annual event, which has huge prize money for the winners.

Last year about 50 people from Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Nepal and other places had participated in this show.

This time the Nayuma family in Namchi has announced a cash prize of Rs two lakh in addition to Rs 60,000 given by the SFC every year as prize money.

Orchids like Cymbidium, Lycaste, Paphiopedium, Cattleya generic, Dendrobium and Phallaenopsis are likely to vie with each other to draw the attention of the nature lovers.

Landmine kills 26 on way to wedding in Pakistan

QUETTA, Pakistan, Mar 10 (Reuters) Twenty-six people travelling to a wedding in southwest Pakistan were killed today when their vehicle hit a landmine near Pakistan's main natural gas fields. The blast happened in Dera Bugti district of Baluchistan province. Provincial government spokesman Raziq Bugti blamed autonomy-seeking militants for planting the mine. ''Most of the dead are women and children. Seven people were injured,'' Bugti said. Baluch militants have waged a low-level insurgency for greater control.....

Washington, Mar 10: US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Richard Boucher has expressed confidence that the India-US civilian nuclear deal would win Congressional approval as lawmakers realise its importance for the nation. 6 persons, 5 bar girls arrested

Mumbai, Mar 10: A bar owner and five bar girls were arrested early today (Mar 10, 2006) for running the business after the stipulated time. Police had raided the Greenarya Bar near Sheetla Devi Mandir, Mahim in northcentral Mumbai at around 0130 hrs today and arrested Mr Vishwanath Sitaram Koshi (42) owner of bar and five bar girls, police said here today.
