Concern over MLAs' absenteeism

Bhopal, Mar 10 (UNI) The Madhya Pradesh assembly today expressed concern over legislators absenting themselves during question hour, despite having themselves forwarded queries.

Certain members even demanded that such MLAs not be paid their daily allowance. Today, a whopping 13 of 25 questioners were missing and question hour concluded 15 minutes ahead of schedule. This was the third instance this week.

''Steps should be taken to halt this practice even it involves modifying rules. In case of absence, the legislator concerned may authorise another member to pose the question. Besides the number of starred queries may be raised from 25 to 30,'' suggested Dr I M P Verma (BSP).

The suggestion to authorise another MLA was echoed by former minister Indrajit Kumar (Cong).

Speaker Ishwardas Rohani said the suggestions could be considered if Leader of the Opposition Jamuna Devi concurred.

The demand to cut allowances, by Mr Brijendra Singh Rathor (Cong), found support from Commerce and Industry Minister Babulal Gaur.

''Public money is expended in seeking information and drafting the replies,'' Cooperatives Minister Gopal Bhargav pointed out.
