Cellular jail completes 100 years

Port Blair, Mar 10 (UNI) The Cellular Jail in Andamans, which was a mute witness to the trial and tribulations of the country's hundreds of freedom fighters, today completed 100 years of its existence.

Now a national memorial, the jail which was called 'Kalapani', was used by the British during the independence movement to incarcerate hundreds of freedom fighters.

Three surving freedom fighters and spouses and close relatives of deceased freedom fighters joined a ceremony at the jail to commemorate the centenary.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands Lt Governor Lt Gen (retd) Madan Mohan Lakhera was among those who offered tributes to the jail's former inmates.

A concert by Hindustani vocalist Shubha Mudgal at the Island Tourism Festival ground was another highlight of the day.
