Car blast in Russia's Dagestan kills policeman

MAKHACHKALA, Russia, Mar 10 (Reuters) A car exploded today in the Russian region of Dagestan killing a senior policeman and wounding his driver, an Interior Ministry spokesman said.

The blast ripped through the car as it was being driven along a street in the republic's capital, killing the deputy head of the local criminal police department, who was a passenger in the car. His driver was wounded.

Dagestan, a Muslim republic which borders Chechnya, has been targeted by Islamist militants, who Russian authorities say are seeking to destabilise the republic and create an Islamic state in the North Caucasus.

Rebel groups say they are responding to police brutality and official corruption.

EC releases calender of events for RS polls

Bangalore, Mar 10 (UNI) The Election Commission (EC) today released the calender of events for the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha to fill up four vacancies by the elected members of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. An EC notification here said the candidates could submit their nominations at the Assembly till March 17 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature was March 20. The nominations would be taken up for scrutiny on March 18......

Notification for Himachal's Rajya Sabha seat issued

Shimla, Mar 10 (UNI) The Election Commission today issued the notification for the Rajya Sabha seat from Himachal Pradesh falling vacant on April 2, State Chief Electrol Officer Prem Kumar said. The last date for filing nomination papers for the seat would be March 17, he said. The term of the present incumbent Kripal Parmar expires on April two. Mr Kumar said the scrutiny of the nomination papers would be done on March 18.....

HC orders DGP to form spl team to probe retreat centre matter

Kochi, Mar 10 (UNI) The Kerala High Court today ordered the Director General of Police to constitute a special team headed by an IG of police to investigate various allegations against the Muringoor divine retreat centre. Justice K Padmanabhan Nair directed the DGP to constitute a special team headed by IGP Vinson M Paul, who is now chairman and managing director of Kerala State Housing Construction Cooperative Society to probe the matter. The Government initiated suo-motu.....
