Sushma, Kalraj, Ahluwalia, Apte re-nominated for RS

New Delhi, Mar 10: The Bharatiya Janata Party today re-nominated Ms Sushma Swaraj, Mr Kalraj Mishra, Mr Bal Apte and Mr S S Ahluwalia as their candidates for the biennial election to the Rajya Sabha.

The Central Election Committee of the party also put up three new faces -- Mr Vinay Katiar, Mr Gopalji Vyas and Ms Anusuiya Uike -- for the Upper House as it cleared a list of nine candidates.

Ms Swaraj, who had been representing the party from Uttaranchal, has now been made a candidate from Madhya Pradesh, party general secretary Pramod Mahajan announced at a press conference.

The party's nominees are: Mr Bal Apte (Maharashtra), Mr Ahluwalia (Jharkhand), Mr Vyas (Chattisgarh), Mr Mishra and Mr Katiar (UP) and Ms Swaraj, Mr Vikram Verma, Mr Narain Singh Kesari and Ms Anusiuya Uike (all from MP).

The Committee also cleared the candidature of Mr Ashok Dhawan and Mr Ram Naresh Yadav for the UP Legislative Council seats.

Afridi replaces Razzaq in Irish team for C

London, Mar 10 (UNI) Ireland has signed Shahid Afridi as their second overseas player, following his Pakistani teammate Abdul Razzaq's last minute withdrawal, for the C&G Trophy beginning April 23 in Hampshire. Afridi was signed in to replace Razzaq who pulled out to prepare for his side's series against England in June. Earlier, Saqlain Mushtaq also signed for Ireland after being overlooked for quite sometime by Pakistani selectors. The off-spinner last played a Test match.....

BCCI, PCB request ECB to stage charity ODI series

London, Mar 10 (UNI) India and Pakistan have requested the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to stage an ODI series between the two sides here for raising funds for the victims of the October 8 earthquake. Pakistan court frees doctors jailed for Qaeda ties

KARACHI, Mar 10 (Reuters) A Pakistani high court today ordered the release of two doctors sentenced last year to seven years imprisonment for working with an al Qaeda-linked group, lawyers said. Akmal Waheed and Arshad Waheed were convicted by an anti-terrorism court in March 2005 of sheltering militants and raising funds for militant activities, as well as treating a wounded militant.
