Banking service in Manipur affected

Imphal, Mar 10 (UNI) Banking services in Manipur was badly affected after the State Bank of India (SBI) main branch here failed to conduct financial transactions since March 8, following systems failure.

SBI officials said the computer system crashed and it would take another five to six days to rectify the system error as there was no engineer in the office.

Hundreds of people waited outside the bank today as the gates were locked with a sign board outside declaring the system failure.

Services of other banks which depend on SBI were also affected.

The system failure had outraged people as the main festival of the Manipuris, the Yaoshang or Holi, would begin on March 14 and would continue for five days.

The SBI main branch is the only bank, which provides coins and money in smaller denominations required for the festival.

Large number of people waited outside the bank refusing to go back.

India enters pact with IAVI for AIDS control

New Delhi, Mar 10 (UNI) The government has entered into an agreement with International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) for accelerating the efforts to develop a vaccine to counter HIV. Minister of state for health and family welfare Panabaka Lakshmi said in the rajya sabha today the National AIDS Research Institute in Pune had initiated phase one clinical trial of a vaccine candidate. Besides, the ICMR's Tuberculosis Research Centre in Chennai launched the second phase one.....

Police officer misbehaves with Cong MLA; Assembly adjourned

Three earthquakes rattle Andaman Sea Region

New Delhi, Mar 10 (UNI) Three earthquakes, all measuring 5.2 on the Richter Scale, rocked the Andaman sea region since last night, the Met office said today. The two moderate intensity temblors occurred in the region at 0936 hrs and 1014 hrs today. While the epicenter of the first quake was 10.5 degrees North latitude and 94.3 degrees East longitude, the origin of the second tremor was located at 9.9 degrees North latitude and.....
