Hubli, Mar 5 (UNI) Veteran Hindustani vocalist Dr Gangubai Hangal was given a hearty felicitation by her disciples and fans at a colourful function here on her 94th birthday today.

This is also her 75th year of stage performances, which she celebrated by lighting a candle with blind and mentally retarded children. On the occasion, a famous pedha maker distributed 94 kg of pedha to the participants.

Noted Hindi film actor Nana Patekar, who was the chief guest at the function, described Hangal as the empress of classical music and wished her a long life.

Replying to the felicitation, Hangal said she might give concerts anywhere, but Hubli would continue to be her home. ''Not a single classical music programme is held in Hubli even once a year...I hope there will be at least one programme every year from now onwards,'' she added.

On the occasion, Hangal Music Foundation and Hubli Arts Circle jointly organised a full night music concert from this evening.
