Guilty traders shell out over Rs 2 cr as fine

Bangalore, Mar 3 (UNI) The Karnataka Weight and Measurement department has collected over Rs two crore as fine from guilty traders across the state since April 2005.

An official release here said the department had during surprise checks found over 28,000 traders guilty of cheating consumers and slapped a fine on them, totally amounting to Rs 2.12 crore.

During the period the department had also collected over Rs 7.69 crore as fees for issuing certificates to over 328,749 shops and establishments for their weighing machines.

The department officials informed UNI that the revenue collection could be further boosted, if all the vacant posts in the department were filled.

Gas Tragedy: Accused's statements recorded

Bhopal, Mar 2 (UNI) For the second consecutive day today, the local chief judicial magistrate's court recorded statements of those accused in the criminal case -- under section 301 of the CrPC -- pertaining to the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy caused by leakage of methyl isocyanate from the now-closed Union Carbide factory.
