Pakistan pulverise Briatin 8-1 in second tie

Sydney: Pakistan men's hockey side revived memories of their Olympic glory days in the 1950s and 60s when they won their second match 8-1 in Pool ‘A’ and gave Britain their worst ever defeat in the event.

The result was a major boost for Pakistan who had drawn 2-2 with unfancied Canada in their opener. Striker Sohail Abbas scored twice from corners and once from a penalty stroke, while Mohammad Nadeem also found the net to give Pakistan a 4-0 half-time lead.

While Pakistan converted three of their four penalty corners in the first half, it was a story of missed opportunities for Britain, who had only Mark Pearn's 20th minute goal to show for their six corners.

Things went from bad to worse for Britain's goal-keeper Simon Mason in the second half, with Nadeem grabbing a second and Atif Bashir, Kamran Ashraf and Mohammad Sarwar adding to the rout.

Britain next face Malaysia on Wednesday. Pakistan, the Netherlands and Germany are the main pool contenders.

It now moves into its final journey towards Sydney. The torch relay has surely been purged of its.....
