Mukesh Kumar to quit after Sydney Olympics

New Delhi: Sydney will be mercurial hockey winger Mukesh Kumar's last outing. The Hyderabadi, who has played over 300 internationals, has decided to quit after the Olympics and focus on things more personal.

In fact, the meticulous Mukesh has chalked out specific details of what he has to do in the next few years. "I want to devote more time to my family," Mukesh Kumar told India Abroad News Service in an exclusive chat.

"This is my last Olympics Games. After this I will play only selected international tournaments. Also, I want to concentrate on my Indian Airlines job," he said.

It will be Mukesh's third Olympic games, and the 30-year-old feels he is best equipped to deliver in Sydney, thanks to his vast experience as a right-winger. "I will give my 100 per cent at the Games; I want to give my best in each match," he promised.

"Actually, this is the fittest team of the last one year." Naturally, he is keen to make Sydney a memorable outing. Mukesh was happy with the Bangalore preparatory camp. He has improved his speed, thanks also to physical trainer Ramesh's personalised schedules.

Ramesh, who also trains athletes, will accompany the hockey team to Sydney. He gave the team members personalised training schedules, which helped them improve their fitness, speed, endurance, and stamina.

"I'm in peak fitness now," Mukesh, who has always been one of the fittest players around, said. Now, the fleet-footed Mukesh has decided to divert all his energies toward running his family well and learn more about his job.

He is married to Gorakhpur's Nidhi Kullar, a former hockey international, who works with the South Central Railways, and has a daughter. Mukesh, a commercial manager with Indian Airlines, also wants to "learn the basics" of his job.

After travelling across the world from its home in Olympia in Greece, and - by happy inspiration - visiting New Zealand and island-hopping through the South Pacific, the flame has made a vast tour of Australia. It now moves into its final journey towards Sydney. The torch relay has surely been purged of its.....
